Not a paintbrush in sight!
Oil & cold wax medium is unique in the sense that unlike acrylics it takes a little while to dry so it gives the painter more time to manipulate the paint. You can scratch and gouge designs, scrape away paint or add more layers of paint with a scraper or palette knife.
What you see in this picture are silicone tools which you load with a mixture of oil paint & cold wax and you gently layer your mix onto your panel, and this can be a paper or wood substrate. These are the best substrates for cold wax medium. Canvas is not suitable for cold wax medium. Work on canvas may crack or sag and is therefore not archieval.
You Tube Videos
You can and you should learn from the videos on Youtube. The only difficulty is that trying to learn from a 12-minute video what requires at least a 2- 4 day hands-on or online workshop participation is to say the least very challenging. So come and join in my workshop. I'll show you how to relax and paint intuitively and let your abstract painting speak to you. To get yourself started at home please contact me for a free starter kit. Join the many contemporary artists overseas who are choosing to incorporate cold wax medium in their art. The most wonderful aspect of this medium is that it brings out the beauty of "happy accidents" in your painting which you will learn to embrace as wabi-sabi which is a Japanese term meaning the art of appreciating the beauty in imperfections. So first play and enjoy laying the oil & cold wax colours, then scratch, gouge and create. Composition, principles and elements of design will follow.
